Core to the Kūpuna Shed’s mission is engagement with and support of local community organizations. Members generously volunteer their time to build furniture and other items, including picnic tables and playhouses for elementary schools, planters and sheds for community gardens, benches for museums, hospitality carts for hospitals, and picket fences for a cemetery.

Spotlighted Projects

Hospitality Cart

Helping the Ronald McDonald House better serve families with children in the neonatal intensive care unit of Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children the cart travels to families’ rooms with snacks, small games/toys and personal hygiene essentials–simple comforts that help caregivers take a breath and stay focused on their child’s health and recovery.

Preschool Marketplace Playhouse

Built for the Waiokeola Church Preschool, the playhouse fulfills a decades long wish for play environment for children to develop confidence and feel loved and valued.

Reading Tree and Bench

In the recently renovated Liliha Public Library, the eight foot high tree provides a gathering and reading spot in the children’s section. Its integrated bench includes inlays of four Hawaiian birds.

Accessible Garden Furniture

Built for the Cultivating Care: Memory Café at Hoʻōla ʻĀina Pilipili Garden, furniture includes wheelchair accessible planters, a potting station and a sitting bench. The garden provides an outdoor venue support programs to help kūpuna with dementia and their caregivers
