About the Kūpuna Shed
How does it differ from a Menʻs Shed?
Menʻs Shed is an international movement started in Australia. The Honolulu Kūpuna Shed started in 2015 as the Honolulu Menʻs Shed and was the first in the United States. Recognizing the value of women members, our name was changed to the Honolulu Kūpuna Shed. Currently about 20% of our members are women.
Is the Kūpuna Shed a maker space?
No. We do not provide access to equipment for a fee. We are a community built around people with a goal of keeping kūpuna active and engaged. Our tools and equipment are merely a way to facilitate our goal.
Can I bring a piece of furniture or a bicycle for repair?
No. Although it has tools and experienced members, the Kūpuna Shed is not a repair shop. However, individual members are free to do repairs for themselves and friends.
Iʻve heard the Kūpuna Shed will be moving. When will that happen?
Our current lease at Lana Lane runs through December 2027. However, we are actively looking for a new location.
Can I donate unwanted bicycles, tools, or wood?
Yes. We welcome such donations as long as the tools and bicycles are not excessively rusted or damaged. Donations can be dropped off during our normal hours of operation.
Membership
Do I have to be retired to join?
No. While the Kūpuna Shed is primarily for senior men and women, all adults who support the mission of the Kūpuna Shed are welcome. Our younger members are aspiring kūpuna.
Do I need woodworking or bicycling repair experience?
No. For those wishing to learn skills we offer classes and workshops. Plus, members are always willing to show how to do something on an informal basis.
What does it cost?
An annual membership is $100.00. Courses typically charge an additional fee.
What does membership include?
Unlimited access to tools and equipment; access to classes, at an additional fee; wood purchase at a greatly discounted member price; and participation in all activities.
Are there other requirements?
Since the Kūpuna Shed is an entirely volunteer organization, members are expected to contribute to maintenance of the shed, helping out with events, and contributing to membership camaraderie.
