$40.00

Instructors: Alexander Watt & Raj Issuree

Length: 9 hours

Cost: $40   Note, this is a special price, which only covers the equipment and supplies. The normal course fee is waived since participants are expected to donate at least one finished item to the shed for the holiday sales.

Class size limit: 8

Requisites: None

Required equipment: The cost of the course covers all equipment and supplies: carving knife, curved spoon carving knife, honing strop, protective gloves, and two wood blanks. Participants get to keep all their equipment.

Description: This class is intended to demonstrate all aspects of sharping wooden kitchen tools. With these skills in hand shed members can produce tools to be sold during the upcoming holiday sales.

Participants will learn to shape various kitchen tools such as spatulas, spoons and spurdles.

Instructors will cover the following:
– Different carving and shaping techniques using flat and curved carving knives and curved chisels,
– How to refine shapes using files, rasps and shaping tools, and
– Appropriate sanding and finishing techniques.

The Shed will provide 2 wooden blanks, one to carve for personal and one to donate back to the Shed to sell at upcoming markets.

Instructors:

Alexander Watt is an ISA Certified Arborist with 7 years of experience climbing and working in the field. He has been producing carved objects for 25 years. What began as whittling in his teens to pass the time (and woo young ladies) evolved into a strange preocupation with spoons and ladles. For him, the beauty of spoons is that they maintain function while emphasizing non-linear and irregular forms.

Raj Issuree learned how to carve when at 18 years old in Mauritius Island and South Africa from a Master Carver. Immigrated to the US in 1984 and became a Physical Therapist at the Mayo Clinic. School and professional life got in the way. Did not carve for over 20 years. Now that I am retired, I returned to wood carving thanks to the Kupuna Shed. The shed gave me a place and a reason to return to wood carving.
